Getting started with fashion: How I developed my personal style

Are you having trouble figuring out your personal style? Don't worry! I got you covered with these tips and tricks to find the clothes that bring out the best YOU!

My style is everything to me. I've always expressed myself through what I wore. I love the way a great outfit makes me feel. I like putting together new looks and rotating my pieces often. I like to compliment my dress with my makeup and that's how I got into beauty as well. These next few tips will help you find the best style to compliment your unique personality to shine through your clothing.

FORGET TRENDS, WHAT'S YOUR FANCY?

For most of my adolescent life and even some of my adult years, I've always fallen hard for trends. I've had to resist because I've wasted lots of money doing so. I had to forget trends and go with what felt like me because they never stayed in my closet past that season.

I had to ask myself:

What are my fave colors?

What vibe do I want to give off?

What do you like to show off or not show off?

Who do I admire? Who is my style inspiration?

I have two extremes for my style. My first style is very edgy, dark, sleek, and brooding.

I feel like I never left my goth phase in high school. This includes lots of black and dark gray clothing, leather, blazers, and platform shoes.

My alternative or more frequent style I would describe as whimsical, quirky, and fun.

I enjoy vibrant colors, funky prints, and mini skirts. I love to show off my legs, bring attention to my eyes, and cool makeup!

My style inspirations are Zoe Kravitz, Rihanna, Zendaya, Solange, and Victoria Beckham.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Do you ever look into your wardrobe and notice you have most of the same pieces?

Yeah, I've been there.

I've noticed I'm really into collared shirts or t-shirts with a small pocket. There was also a moment in time where I had at least 15 pairs of just black jeans. LOL!

There's no growth in the comfort zone, simply. In order to find what was best for me, my personality, and my body figure, I had to get out of my comfort zone and try different things.

BACK TO BASICS

Do you also find yourself searching for something to wear but can't find anything? This might mean that you have too many statement pieces and not enough basics in your wardrobe.

No need to worry! You can build a great outfit from basic pieces and it might be the last ingredient of the Krabby Patty Formula.

Great basics include:

  • White button-up shirt

  • Black blazer

  • Crisp White T-shirt

  • Dark Wash or Black Skinny jeans

  • Little Black Dress

  • A Nice Pair of Trousers

  • Black/ White Tank Top

  • White Sneakers

  • Black Ballet Flats

You can get great basics from H&M, Forever21, Uniqlo, and Shein.

Styling a basic outfit could be starting from a crisp white t-shirt, a pair of black skinny jeans, and some white sneakers. To bring out the outfit, I would add a belt, a funky earring, and a cool jacket or oversized collared shirt. What makes these pieces perfect is that they can go with anything for any occasion and you can

DRAWING INSPIRATION

Use Pinterest or Instagram and save your favorite style pictures in different folders to create the perfect mood board. This was a very useful method to identify my personal style and add specific pieces to my wardrobe.

REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN!

Your personal style is literally an expression of you so don't forget to have fun with it.

There are no limits to expressing yourself through clothing so go crazy! Do the unimaginable.
